Douglas Shire Council Mayor officially opens Mossman’s first SDA

A milestone for the small community of Mossman recently with the unveiling of the town’s first Specialist Disability Accommodation. Douglas Shire Council Mayor, Lisa Schomazzon was on hand to cut the ribbon, along with MiHaven’s co-Director, Sarah Mort.

“We don’t just build homes; we create opportunities with a social impact,” Ms Mort stated.

“These homes are NDIS-registered, providing oversight for both residents and properties. Many individuals are unaware that after receiving their NDIS plan and completing an assessment, they can live more independently in purpose-built homes.

“Previously, limited options forced many young people under 65 into aged care. Now, those in unsuitable rentals can apply for SDA approval through NDIS, which is a lifelong, non-revocable guarantee, allowing flexibility to transfer plans across Australia. Understanding this process is key to improving living conditions and quality of life.”

The new MiHaven Care development, located in Thomas Street, Mossman comprises two brand-new, purpose-built homes, each featuring three bedrooms with ensuites and dedicated overnight accommodation for carers.
